Honeyfield Pancake House & Restaurant

This week we hit up Honeyfield Pancake House and Restaurant in Lockport. Remember that each week, the person selecting the restaurant prepares a conversation-starter question. This week's question was: what do you want to be when you grow up (since, we’re never really done growing up, are we?).  Naturally we all gravitated towards things that, to us, wouldn’t feel like work. We remarked that when you’re passionate about something, you do it well and it shows. We unanimously agreed Honeyfield is a stellar example of this.

BEHIND OUR RATINGS

Food Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [5/5]

When we as reviewers visit a restaurant and find ourselves creating a new rule for assessment, it’s a big deal. Every one of the adults broke our diet because we were enticed either by the smell of pancakes in the parking lot or the sight of them at an adjacent table. We’ve now created the “Honeyfield rule” which speaks to an irresistibility factor. If, unanimously, we simply cannot resist, the food gets an automatic 5.

Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [5/5]

Our server Mia was kind, funny, and very attentive. Both coffee and water pitchers were left on the table for us - big plus in our book. We never felt rushed despite it being a packed Sunday morning. There is respectful signage at the tables requesting a two-hour seating limit during peak times. This is the appropriate and respectful way to address this matter (see our other reviews).

Atmosphere: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [4/5]

Very homestyle breakfast place feel - not diner, but that cozy neighborhood spot vibe. Big windows (though the blinds were closed - we'd open them!). The waiting area is separate from the main dining floor, so no one's hovering over (read: breathing on you) while you eat.

Noise Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ [4/5]

A little noisy when full (and it was), but totally manageable in a booth. The tall ceilings probably amplify sound when it gets busy, but we could hear each other fine.

Value for Money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ [4/5]

Our bill was a couple bucks more than recent spots, but we also ordered bigger entrees and extras (smoothie, side of bacon). Worth every penny for quality.

Wait Time: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [5/5]

We arrived at 9am (a half hour earlier than usual) and were seated right away. The line started building almost immediately thereafter but moved pretty quickly. There's a nice long bench that spans almost the full entry wall for those waiting.

Kid-Friendly: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [5/5]

Kids' menu available, and the place was filled with families.

WHAT WE ORDERED

Court ordered the pumpkin pecan pancakes (a specialty). The pancakes were springy but not overly so, with that perfect pumpkin density. The cinnamon butter was, ahem, “insane.” Topped with whipped cream and caramel sprinkles. He stopped at the halfway mark because he could feel them plumping in his stomach 😆 The coffee? Probably the best he's had thus far on our SSBC adventures - soft, not bitter, good breakfast coffee you could drink all day. Not utilitarian "gas up your engine" coffee - just really good quality.

Kay got the Bananas Foster crepes, her all-time favorite. She hadn't had them in probably a year and they were worth the wait - filled with cream, real rum sauce with bananas, granola chunks, cinnamon butter, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle. Heavenly!

Sunny ordered chicken tenders with fries and the Spider-Man smoothie. The chicken was a bit dry but good (and that's how we like it). Fries were good and well-seasoned, though smaller in portion. The smoothie had a slight phantom tanginess that belonged neither to strawberry nor raspberry. I’m guessing the yogurt was flavored? It was OK but we’d try something else next time.

I (Bridget) got the Elvis pancakes - because how often do you see that?? (bacon pancakes with chocolate, banana, and peanut butter). They were quite good. The pancakes were springy and moist. Part of trying new things is learning about yourself, and today I learned that bacon in pancakes might not be my favorite thing (I like my bacon crisp and it naturally softens when baked into pancakes). That said, for what they were, these were very good and I kept eating long after I should have stopped.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Our Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ [5/5]

What Made Us Smile:

The smell of pancakes in the parking lot (the moment you open the car door you know it's ON). That cinnamon butter. The best coffee yet on our journey.

What Could Be Better:

More fries with the kids' meal, more bananas on the Elvis pancakes. When circumstances allow, open those blinds and let the light in!

Will the SSBC Be Back?

100%. Though based on the rules of SSBC, we can't come back for a year (no repeats!) so it will need to happen on a day off.
